said to be targeting a number of countries including the usa. and for it part, the u.s. has ramped up missile strikes over militant training grounds in pakistan. we have two reports on all of this tonight from our senior team, beginning right here with chief investigative correspondent brian ross. brian? >> reporter: diane, what's behind all this is what a senior u.s. and european officials tell us is a credible threat of a major coordinated series of attacks in britain, france and possibly the u.s. the official said no specific time or place was known, but that the plan -- involving commando like attacks against economic targets in europe -- had been detected after the capture this summer of a radicalized german muslim who reportedly had been training with teams of others in pakistan for the attacks. now a worldwide manhunt is underway. among those being sought are a group of other radicalized germans who have been training at terror camps in pakistan, producing videos in german to gain more recruits. german officials say some of the recruits actually came from the same mosque in ham

on the scene for just a little while and join us with the details. >> reporter: good morning. it is still kite an active scene. you can see behind me lots of firefighters still here on the scene trying to put out hot spots in this high-rise building. if you take a look, can you see the residents in this apartment building have been evacuated and are still waiting out here at the scene just trying to get word about whether or not they can get back in. i can tell you right now, this is what we he know so far. the fire started at about 4:00 this morning. firefighters are telling me it started on the fisk floor of this apartment building. it appears as though they're telling us that it started from a trash fire inside of a stairwell on the fisk floor. it spread pretty quickly. there was a lot of smoke from what i was hearing from everybody here on the scene. lots of people trying to run for safety. i can tell you right now the late we are hearing is that they took seven people to the hospital. we understand from one person that was if critical condition, all adults from what we understand but ther

the heat on his own party members yesterday. nbc tracie potts has more for us in washington. good morning to you, tracie. >> veronica, good morning. we're now starting to hear a tough love message from president obama, aimed not at republicans, but aimed at his own party. he said buck up and he called republicans -- rather democrats irresponsible if they're sitting on their hands complaining. he said it's inexcusable to sit on the sidelines. we heard some of this in wisconsin yesterday at a huge college rally, trying to fight what polls and pundits say is apathy. he told students we can't let the country fall backwards because we didn't care enough to fight. he's doing this four-state swing through several states around the country trying to drum up support because polls are showing that democrats could be in trouble as we head into november's elections. in fact, we have a new nbc "wall street journal" poll. take a look at this. republicans now have a three-point lead over democrats, but that's down from a nine-point lead just last month. and looking at this question, who should control c
